Trying to silence the good people
The Urgency Tour is going great! Just about to turn in here for the night here on day three… two days and four cities to go. Heard that one of the people we met with yesterday called the VoteYes office today and asked for 900 petitions! A couple Catholic gals in Mitchell today said they'll be able to get a thousand signatures in two parishes this weekend.
The Church is definately waking up! And, despite the purposely intimidating and hugely misleading headline and article in today's Rapid City Journal, the church can fully participate in this peition drive without ANY worry of jeapardizing their 501c3 status. Thanks to Bob Ellis for a great post telling the truth there.
In the car, we've been reading Martin Luther King Jr's book entitled "Why We Can't Wait." We thought this was particularly fitting as we seek justice for the unborn and stir the church out of her silence.
Certainly Birmingham had its white moderates who disapproved of Bull Connor's tactics. Certainly Birmingham had its decent white citizens who privately deplored the maltreatment of Negroes. But they remained publicly silent. It was a silence born in fear- fear of social, political and economic reprisals. The ultimate tragedy of Birmingham was not the brutality of the bad people, but the silence of the good people. (pg. 36)
