A world without children - Demographic Winter

Ideas have consequences. Good ideas bear good fruit. Bad ideas bring bad fruit. Particularly sad is when our selfishness becomes costly to our kids.

59 nations – with 44% of the world’s population – are now experiencing below-replacement birthrates. Worldwide, there are 6 million fewer children (under age 6) today than there were in 1990. The United Nations estimates that if current trends continue, by 2050 there will be 248 million fewer children (under age 5) than there are now. Overall, Europe’s fertility rate is 1.3; a birthrate of 2.1 is needed just to replace current population. In this century, countries such as Italy, Spain, Russia and even France could cease to exist…
