Big typo - SD Argus Leader mistakes "caring" for "killing"
Haven't we been repeatedly told by the editors of the Argus Leader that they will stay neutral in the abortion debate? If this were actually the case they'd adopt neutral terminology. I don't expect them to start using my anti-life verbiage to describe the pro-aborts, the abortion advocates, those in the death camp. It's even tolerable for me that they stay with "pro-choice" as a term, although we all know Planned Parenthood only tells women they have one choice. In any case, my point is pro-life people never gets the courtesy of being called pro-life. We get anti-abortion, anti-choice. 165,000 people in this state voted in 2006 for an almost total ban on abortion - yet the media refers to us as a small group of extremists or activists. Since IM11 has substantial exceptions for rape and incest the number of pro-lifers is well over 200,000 voters who are FOR life.
In reporting on the Lampstand Project last week, all fairness was cast aside. With newspaper subscriptions plummeting and Gannett News Service laying off thousands right now because people are going online for their news (and turning to blogs for the straight scoop), you'd think they'd cater to a broader audience. Apparently not.
Here's what I'm referring to right now - I sat on this for a few days figuring I'd ignore it but obviously I decided not to. Last week a coalition of ministers from all across South Dakota announced they are stepping up to the plate and throwing their church's full weight behind women and children in crisis who we come in contact with - financial, etc., any kind of support. We said we'll foot the bill and come alongside women through the pregnancy and long after it. Most American's would find that quite CARING. But the Argus calls that - bold letters - ANTI. Instead, they feature one old mainline clergyman who works for those who profit from killing the unborn and he gets called "Rev. Rodney Gist, caring minister at First United Methodist Church and advisor to the South Dakota Campaign for UNHealthy Families." Perhaps the guy is a pastoral care minister and the Argus just botched his role. However, it doesn't read that way. You decide…

How people, who stand in the pulpit can support a death sentence for babies is beyond me. I used to be a member of a mainline denominational church. I met privately with one Pastor and asked her what her view of abortion was. She was prochoice. Her husband had some medical problems, and they were looking at possible stem cell transplants. I laid it out on the table for that Pastor by asking her, "If your daughter-in-law (who was pregnant at the time) decided to abort your unborn grandchild so that the stem cells could be used to help your husband, would you approve of that?" The Pastor said, "If it helped him, yes." Then I asked her if she really meant that it would be OK for her grandchild to be killed. She again said she wouldn't have any problem with that. I tried to explain that a baby was a baby from the moment of conception, but she went into the discussion of a blog of tissue…blah, blah, blah! How could anyone say it is OK for their grandchild or any unborn child to be killed? I cried, walked out of that church, and never went back. I see that Pastor once in awhile, and I have forgiven her. We hug every time we see each other. Her husband seems to be doing fine. I never asked her again about the stem cell deal, but their grandchild is alive, and that Pastor buys pretty dresses for her.

Leave it to the Argus to stretch the truth. Pastor Gist does fall under the Caring Ministry at First UMC church, but the title of "Caring Minister" belongs to someone else. His capacity is visitation minister to retirement and nursing home residents. I am seriously reconsidering my membership in a church that shelters someone so outspoken for the pro-choice lobby on this issue…especially with the title of "Pastor."
