In a September 1, 2009 letter to me, SD Governor Mike Rounds says… "I can assure you, the Department of Health will enforce these laws in accordance with the most recent ruling…. My record on abortion is clear. I am pro-life and have a strong commitment to protecting mothers and unborn children."

And this part is timely— The Alpha Center is reminding us to keep the pressure on him and the new Attorney General.

Recently we reported on Judge Karen Schreier's decision regarding the 2005 Informed Consent Legislation in South Dakota that has been in litigation since its passage. Planned Parenthood sued the state of South Dakota basically claiming the free speech rights of their abortionists were more important than a woman's right to receive truthful and accurate information about abortion. Alpha Center intervened in this case on behalf of women who, had they received the information this law requires; they would not have had an abortion. The most recent ruling in this case by liberal Judge Karen Schreier (of South Dakota) was partly in our favor and partly in Planned Parenthood's favor.

In our favor (only because she had to due to a previous 8th Circuit Court of Appeals decision that overruled her) she ruled that Planned Parenthood must disclose to women that an abortion terminates the "life of a whole, separate, unique, living human being." However, she ruled for Planned Parenthood and their continued deception of women by ruling they DON'T have to tell women honest information regarding their right to have a relationship with their child and the potential negative side effects of abortion, specifically increased suicidal ideation.

In only 1 day the state must make a decision whether to appeal Judge Schreier's decision and in essence, protect women from the lies of Planned Parenthood. Knowing that Judge Schreier has been overturned numerous times in this case by a higher court already, Planned Parenthood will go to any lengths to protect their money making industry of death by ensuring the state doesn't appeal.

Ask Governor Rounds:

* To help women in our state receive accurate information about abortion, as they do every other medical procedure in this state.

* To do the right thing and let Planned Parenthood know that they can't manipulate this state or the citizens of this state through lies and deception.

* To ensure that women and families in South Dakota are no longer lied to about the damaging effects of abortion including increased risk of suicidal ideation. Unfortunately, the Alpha Center is all too familiar with this problem as we regularly deal with suicidal women, many of whom have attempted suicide on more than one occasion because of the severe pain and trauma their abortion caused them.

* Further, he can help ensure that all women know that they have the right to a relationship with their unborn child.
Unfortunately, all to often, women experience extreme pressure to have an abortion from parents, boyfriends and/or friends.
