Catholic bishops give new abortion President a choice - abortion or health care
Catholic Bishops met a couple days ago to give the new abortion President a choice - abortion or health care?? Here's the news update I got via email yesterday from the Family Research Council.
Facing the most pro-abortion administration in U.S. history, the Catholic Church is mobilizing to respond. In a meeting yesterday, 220 Catholic bishops drafted an official statement, warning Capitol Hill and President-elect Obama that passing the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) would be viewed as a direct attack on religion. Back in July of 2007, Barack Obama announced at a Planned Parenthood banquet that signing FOCA was his first priority: "Well, the first thing I'd do as President is sign the Freedom of Choice Act. …On this fundamental issue, I will not yield and Planned Parenthood will not yield." With almost full control of Congress, Obama will be expected to live up to his promise as payback for the abortion community's support. If successful, the newly expanded majority would abolish over 300 pro-life laws and restrictions — even reinstating partial-birth abortion.
Although the Catholic bishops have offered to work with the administration on a number of issues, the defense of life is non-negotiable. "This is not a matter of political compromise," said Bishop Daniel Conlon of Steubenville, Ohio. "It's a matter of absolutes." For some leaders, the church's forceful opposition to FOCA could be the excuse Catholic Democrats need to vote the legislation down.
If not for their conscience, members should be wary of the Bishops' warning for the mere fact that Catholics are a powerful player in the U.S. health care system. As Ed Morrissey points out, Catholics run more than 550 hospitals and 415 clinics in America, spending billions out of pocket to help the disadvantaged get the care they need. Under FOCA, religious providers would have two options: either comply with the abortion mandate or end their services completely. Is Congress so intent on appeasing Planned Parenthood that it would jeopardize the health care of 90 million Americans? We'll see.
Catholics ought to be proud of their bishops. The only thing standing in the way of the immoral agenda of the left is the Church. Looks like you'll be hearing more from us in the days ahead.

this is not a grey issue… it is life and death… "it's a matter of absolutes." Go Bishops!

As most of you viewing this blog, I just don't get it. Does anyone know the statistics of what percentage of catholics voted for Obama? Did those people just not care what they believe in or just not educate themselves on Obama's plans? If anyone has that statistics can you please post it? Thanks!

The following is under the heading: Protestants and Catholics
Protestant voters were evenly split between being registered as Democrats and Republicans. However, they sided with Sen. McCain by a 53% to 46% split. That 7-point gap was just half the margin accorded to George W. Bush in 2004 (57% to 42%), but within range of the 4-point preference given to Mr. Bush in 2000 (51% to 47%).
Nearly half of all registered Catholics were aligned with the Democratic Party (48%), compared to only about one-quarter associated with the Republicans (28%) and one-fifth who remained independent (20%). Their voting behavior was significantly different than that of Protestants: they backed Sen. Obama by a 56% to 43% outcome. That was far different than the even split in 2004 (49% for Pres. Bush vs. 49% for Sen. Kerry) and substantially more support for the Democratic candidate than they had given to Al Gore in 2000 (49%, versus 43% to Mr. Bush).

Detroit Lewis @ 3:59 pm
So the Catholic Church is going to start paying the same taxes as lobbyist groups? Or do they want to remain tax-exempt as a faith based institution. What part of separation of church and state don't they understand. It is there to protect the church, not the state.
My advice to correctly and legally elected (for once) president Obama is to have the IRS begin to investigate the Catholic church and make them pay taxes if they continue to try to lobby congress.
Steve @ 4:40 pm
Detroit - if the church pulled out of society your taxes would go through the roof because currently the Church is sowing billions into ministries of compassion to the poor. Without the church, the full tab is on YOU to feed the hungry and care for the poor and sick. That's the threat in Catholics are putting forth.
There is no such thing as separation of church and state historically in our nation or practically - sad you grew up on revisionist history. Your version of democracy is also interesting… that only the non-religious can participate in the process. Whatever. Here's the thing, even the "non-religious" are religious and therefore no different from me - we all approach the world from a religious viewpoint even if one's viewpoint is that they are god (humanism/secularism). The only remaining thing to sort out then is whose religious viewpoint will shape the nation - the one this nation has historically been shaped from or the secular version that is trying to push the traditional out?
We don't bow to IRS intimidation and scare tactics anymore. Do you know any churches that have profit to report at the end of the year that they could pay taxes on? All the churches I know give it away. Tithes and offerings have not been taxable income since before our nation was founded. Only recently has the IRS tried to exert control over this - and it's unconstitutional for the govt to issue me a "benefit" in exchange for a certain kind of speech. It violates two constitutional provisions - freedom of speech and free exercise of religion.
Travis @ 4:55 pm
Amen Steve
I think that is the second or third time you had to tell Detroit Lewis the truth about Separation of Church and State.
I think his ears are not working (or he just doesn’t care about his inaccuracies).
I am thinking the latter!
Catholics are a joke @ 7:06 pm
I bet President-Elect Obama is really shaking in his shoes right now. Does anyone really think the scare tactics by the Catholic church will work? Seriously, Obama will call their bluff and every single one of you know it. If all Catholics voted the way their church told them to, McCain would be the next president and RL 6 would have passed in 2006. The Catholic church lost all credibility years ago when it covered up the thousands of cases of sexual abuse by it's own clergy. The hypocritical Catholic church has paid out over $1 BILLION to sex abuse victims.
"Although the Catholic bishops have offered to work with the administration on a number of issues, the defense of life is non-negotiable."
Isn't that so kind of the Catholic bishops to offer to work with the admin. Guess what, Obama doesn't have to and will not work with them.
Marcee @ 8:09 pm
I got a confirmation from the Lord, JESUS CHRIST, today. Pray for Obama like he is your son. That will give you a heart of compassion for him. This was spoken to me by one of my friends today. Chuck Pierce's secretary heard God tell her, too, about how to pray for Obama, "Pray for him like he is your son." Ask God to break your heart for Obama, his wife, and their children. Then you will pray according to God's heart. Obama had a terrible childhood and probably has much to deal with and be healed from. He needs our prayers. God will change him dramatically. It doesn't look that way now, but just trust and believe.
Bret @ 11:26 pm
God says in his word to pray for your leaders. What more do you need!?
Some Dude @ 1:54 pm
I hope he tells them to take a hike. At least he plans to take measures to prevent abortions instead of forcing them underground.
