SD committee aborts new abortion bill, but it's not dead yet
The SD Health and Human Services Committee killed the SB 92 bill this morning with a 4-3 vote. SB 92 would require abortion doctors to be available to their patients a day prior to the abortion.
Those who voted to kill the bill were Sandy Jerstad (D), Tom Dempster (R), Stan Adelstien (R) and Pam Merchant (D). Those who voted for the bill were Jason Gant (R), Tom Hansen (R) and Kathy Miles (D).
There is a still a procedural move that could bring the bill up before a full senate vote. Legislative rules stipulate that if 12 of the 35 state senate members agree to bring the bill to the floor, they can smoke it out of the committee. You can help this happen in the next couple of days. It's time to immediately contact each South Dakota state senator and encourage them to support SB 92 so abortion-bound women have have access to their abortion doctor.
