The dilemma of praying for Obama

Last night I went to see Defiance.  I highly recommend you go. Mid-movie I had the thought that the German church in the 1930's should have, at minimum, risen up and prayed Hitler would have been completely and totally unsuccessful in implementing his agenda.

Those who recognize the personhood of the unborn are in a similar dilemma today. Those of us who've spoken out on behalf of the unborn and hammered Obama for having no regard for the most vulnerable in society - we are "reminded" how the "Christian" thing to do is to pray for the success of our new President Obama and they tag on the standard verses that say we should pray for our leaders. Should I pray for success of his agenda to spread the gospel of abortion worldwide? WorldNetDaily broke in yesterday with a bold and controversial article called Pray Obama Fails

That's why I do not hesitate today in calling on godly Americans to pray that Barack Hussein Obama fail in his efforts to change our country from one anchored on self-governance and constitutional republicanism to one based on the raw and unlimited power of the central state. It would be folly to pray for his success in such an evil campaign.

Those who were in our services this weekend heard me pray publicly for Obama's personal safety this week, that God would expose any racist attempts to take his life. I prayed Obama would hear from heaven. Wendy and Rory Alec of GOD TV have broadcast the following prayer today. I share it with you as a great guide as you pray for President Obama…

Father, according to Timothy 2, Paul exhorted that "supplications, prayers, intercessions and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and for all that are in authority that we may lead a quiet peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior". In obedience to Your Word, we join together this day, January 20 2009, with our GOD TV family all across the United States of America and join in one heart and one mind in prayer and intercession for our new incoming President Barack Obama.

Father we ask this day that as Barack Obama is inaugurated here in Washington DC, that You would look down from Heaven and in Your great mercies upon America look down this day upon President Barack Obama and grant him exceeding wisdom in these crucial days ahead facing him and the new administration. Oh mighty Father we pray as a united body to You, the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, that You may grant to Barack Obama the spirit of wisdom and revelation of the knowledge of Yourself this day. That the eyes of President Obama's understanding be enlightened that he may know what is the hope of his calling and the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of Your power to us-ward who believe and to himself, according to the working of Your mighty power which you wrought in Christ, when You raised Him from the dead.

Father we pray that the overshadowing fear of the Lord would start to rest upon this new administration. We pray for Your sovereign hand to guide the President and those in his cabinet. We release YOUR purposes, we release YOUR plan, we release YOUR strategies and YOUR wisdom, we release YOUR governance. We pray for visitation in the President's night hours and revelation in his waking hours, that as he enters the pressures and the challenges of office in 2009 that he would be driven to trust in You as his mighty fortress, that he would find refuge and wisdom under Your wings, that he would seek Your face before he seeks man's wisdom and Father, that You would pour out word after word in season upon him from on high.

Father, we thank you that even as Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Jackson ruled in generations before Barack Obama, that You have placed upon President Barack Obama's shoulders a mantle to root out and tear up wickedness, thank you Father, that by Your sovereign mighty hand, You would imbue him with zealousness and righteousness to rout out evil men and sinister schemes. Grant President Barack Obama the courage to rule with justice and the wisdom to rule under God. And Father, as the body of Christ that we commit to You to lift him up faithfully and fervently. That we may consistently petition Heaven on Barack Obama's behalf and petition President Barack Obama on YOUR behalf.

Father, we also ask that You minister to him in the night hours regarding the issue of abortion that he may know Your heart and Your mind on these issues so important to H eaven. And finally we ask divine protection and blessing over his family and upon his physical life. Preserve his life from being cut off prematurely, Father preserve him from sinister schemes and the schemes of wicked men. Thank you that as President of the United States he will run the course that is laid out for him in this time and this season. Thank you for joining with us and our GOD TV teams all across America to pray for President Barack Obama today and in the months and years ahead. God Bless America! With our love in the service of the Lord Jesus Christ,  Rory and Wendy Alec

Why is it that conservatives are always abusing prayer? Remember when Focus on the Family Action wanted people to pray for rain during Obama's outdoor nomination acceptance speech? And now you want us to pray for President Obama to fail? Well, I can't do that. I want him to succeed. This nation is facing too many problems to have a president fail. For the sake of this nation, I'm going to pray for a successful President Obama.

Steve @ 5:11 pm

Abusing prayer. Whatever Haggs. Like you are the guy to coach me there. Read the post again, no one is praying Obama fails at solving the nations problems. The point is was regarding how to pray for a man's godless agenda to succeed.

Haggs @ 6:13 pm

Well I wasn't criticizing you. I was directing my outrage at that WND article titled "Pray Obama Fails." That's what I thought was so horrible.

If the definition of "success" is President Obama's agenda of radical promotion of abortion, the concept of homosexual "marriage," appeasing terrorists and belligerent nations, promoting government theft aka Marxism aka "spreading the wealth…then why would we conceivably pray FOR such evil things to pass?

Where in any place in the Bible have people been encouraged to pray for an agenda of evil to pass?

If "success" can be defined by Obama getting caught in the grip of God's Holy Spirit, getting his heart right and in line with Biblical teachings, and him doing the opposite of almost everything he has indicated he wants to do, then yes, I pray for his success.

Steve @ 8:18 pm

Haggs - ok, sorry for snapping back.

Bob, you can disagree with President Obama's policy decisions all you want. As much as conservatives make me mad, a healthy debate is good for the country. But Obama has at least four years and he's going to try to solve this countries problems as best he can. I believe that wanting him to fail is wanting America to fail. If McCain had been elected, I would've wanted him to succeed in fixing our problems too.

And I laughed at your comment about encouraging evil. You guys seemed pretty okay with the Bush administration's evils. But maybe that's because he was a Republican.

I think the point is to pray for a turning of his heart as the word declares, "the kings (presidents) heart is in the hand of the Lord. (Prov 21:1) Let us pray, as we do for the lost that President Obama's heart would be turned to fulfill the purposes of God. And may the Lord also warn him in his dreams as he did others before him.

We must guard our hearts lest we become embittered and lose our heart of compassion. Jesus did not rebuke the sinner, He rebuked those who demanded others to keep the law without remembering His love. "They will know us by our love". We don't lose our own convictions, but we are moved with compassion as Jesus and not compelled by our convictions losing sight or their need for an encounter with Love!!

We had all be praying for our President, but the wrath of God is about to fall heavy upon us all if we sit back and allow it to be ok to kill innocent lives. We need to pray that our President and his advisors will see this. There is hope for this country, but our hope should not be anyone other than the One that can help us. We need to pray that God will work through our President. He will open his eyes and allow him to see the danger of abortion. It scares me to think that this country could allow murder to be legal.
